K10 phone tops LG’s new budget range at CES 2017 (hands-on)

In addition to Stylus 3, news of LG’s K series of phones was eliminated prior to CES 2017. But four additions that make up the new mid-range have appeared at the show, here in Las Vegas.

Topping that product line is the K10 (different from the product of the same name released last year). While the entire line of phones has useful features like removable battery and expandable storage, the K10 is the only one you could mistake for a flagship. It has the latest Android version and a fingerprint scanner. And its metal texture adds a touch of elegance – when I tested it, I liked the subtle copper accents and it felt solid.

Main specifications of LG K10

  • 5.3 inch display with 1,280×720 pixel resolution
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB or 32GB of memory, expandable up to 2TB
  • 5 megapixel front camera, 13 megapixel rear camera
  • Removable 2,800mAh battery
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • 149 x 75 x 7.9 mm
  • 142 g
  • Fingerprint scanner

The K10 initially sold for around $ 299 (about £ 240 or AU $ 410, converted). While the 2017 model has more grunt and the latest Android software, we wouldn’t expect it to work any more.

Moving down the range, LG announced the K8, K4, and K3 (no, we don’t know how numbering works either). The K8 and K4 are quite similar: Both have 5-inch screens and 2,500mAh detachable batteries. In fact, it’s hard to tell the difference between two people in real life besides the different colors. But the K8 is a bit more premium with recent Android Nougat, a better rear camera, and twice as much built-in storage.

The smallest of the four is the 4.5-inch K3. It slips easily in the pocket, but its plastic body makes it feel cheap. It has quad-core processors like the K8 and K4, but it has a smaller battery, a 5-megapixel camera, and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The prices of any K-series phones have yet to be announced, but it is expected that the K10 will be the most expensive in the lineup, while the K3 could be the cheapest. LG didn’t mention the availability either, but it will likely reach retailers on different dates depending on the region and carrier (and under different names).
